When and Where to Book Your Next Adventure

This post was originally written to appear on astridonthego.com.

Each year I fly many times in the U.S. and abroad. With each destination, I seek out the best deal possible. Below are the best times and places to book travel for your upcoming adventure.

When to Book

The best day to book travel is Tuesday, which is technically the least expensive day to book depending on how far out from the trip you’re looking.

Cheapair.com watched airfares from 15,000 markets their customers like to travel to and found that the best time to book is 47 days before your departure date. Similarly, a study released by Expedia found data that suggests that the least expensive domestic fares can be found at around 50-100 days prior departure.

USA Today reports that big discounts can also be found while booking last minute. “However, this strategy is best reserved for pleasure travel and spur-of-the-moment vacations because you may not be able to find any bargains late in the game for your desired destination or time frame.”

Where to Book

There are so many travel apps and websites to choose from, it’s best to let the sites do the work for you.

MyDomaine recommends checking aggregator sites such as Kayak, Orbitz, Skyscanner, and Airfarewatchdog. Additionally, check airline websites individually as sometimes they offer the best deals.

“Momondo.com pulls in every flight that exists, including lesser-known budget airlines, and usually has the cheapest flights (Kayak.com is a great tool, but it actually removed budget airlines from its search, so it doesn’t always provide you with the widest range of options),” continues the website.

Other sites to consider when booking a trip are Hipmunk, which also includes an option to book a hotel like Kayak, GetGoing, a site where users pick two destinations and get one, and even Google Flights that offers a flight matrix because the company bought bought flight software ITA. The latter has been found to work best on domestic flights in the U.S.
